How did the Hurricane Cocktail get its name?

The Hurricane cocktail is closely associated with Pat O’Brien’s, the legendary bar in New Orleans. During the Prohibition era, the bar began as a speakeasy, which was a hidden establishment where alcohol was served secretly. The password used to enter was said to be “Storm’s a Brewin’,” a fitting phrase for a drink that would later become known as the Hurricane.

According to the popular story, the bar owner needed a way to use up rum, which was not as popular at the time. By mixing rum with bright tropical fruit juices, sweet grenadine, simple syrup, and fresh lime juice, the classic Hurricane Cocktail Recipe was born. The result was a sweet, tart, and refreshing cocktail that quickly became a New Orleans favorite.

A visit to Pat O’Brien’s is still a memorable experience for cocktail lovers. Sharing a Hurricane with friends is part of the fun, especially when enjoying the lively New Orleans atmosphere that helped make this drink famous.

In the 1940s, Pat O’Brien’s served the original Hurricanes in glasses shaped like hurricane lamps. These distinctive glasses became part of the cocktail’s identity. They were reportedly given to sailors, became very popular, and remain an attraction at the original Pat O’Brien’s today.

Today, you can order a Hurricane at Pat O’Brien’s and keep the glass, which can be packed up for you. Many visitors also choose a go cup, a well-known New Orleans option that allows guests to take their drink with them while walking around the city. For many people, sipping a Hurricane on the streets of New Orleans is part of the classic experience.

How do you make a Hurricane Cocktail?

A classic Hurricane Cocktail is made with both white rum and dark rum. This recipe uses two ounces of each, so it is a strong drink and should be enjoyed responsibly. Passion fruit juice and orange juice create the tropical fruit base, while grenadine and simple syrup add sweetness and color. Fresh lime juice balances the drink with a tart finish.

The cocktail is shaken with ice and strained into an ice-filled Hurricane glass. A slice of orange and a maraschino cherry make the traditional garnish. The finished drink is bright, fruity, smooth, and festive, making it a great choice for summer gatherings, backyard happy hour, Mardi Gras celebrations, or anytime you want a taste of New Orleans at home.

This Hurricane drink recipe is delicious, but it is also quite potent. One cocktail is usually enough for most people because of the generous amount of rum. If you are serving guests, it is easy to double the recipe for two drinks, but be sure to pour carefully and serve it over plenty of ice.

Hurricanes are especially enjoyable in warm weather. They have the refreshing taste of fruit juice, the sweetness of grenadine, and the depth of dark rum. Even if you are far from New Orleans, this homemade Hurricane cocktail brings the same tropical spirit to your glass.

If you enjoy fruity cocktails, you may also like drinks such as a Lava Flow Cocktail, Beach House Cosmos, Prosecco Margaritas, or a POG Punch Hawaiian Cocktail.
