A Drink for Any Occasion

This recipe was a lot of fun to make and is kid-friendly—little hands can help with simple stirring and pouring. After making a previous Ghoul-Aid recipe, I wanted to try another themed drink. I changed the base slightly and added wax vampire fangs (available at craft stores and candy shops) to create a playful Halloween Slushy Punch.

The wax fangs float on top and give a silly, spooky look that kids love. I have fond memories of wax lips from childhood, and my kids enjoyed the same novelty. Beyond Halloween, the punch is versatile enough for showers, receptions, and summer parties—just omit the vampire teeth and add fresh fruit or decorative garnishes for a different vibe.

Best of all, the slushy punch tastes fantastic. The whole family enjoyed it, and it’s easy to scale up for larger gatherings. Below are clear ingredients, step-by-step instructions, and helpful tips for freezing, serving, and variations so you can make this for any event.

Making Slushy Punch

BOIL. In a large pot, bring the sugar, water, and strawberry Jell-O mix to a boil, stirring until the gelatin and sugar dissolve completely.

COMBINE. Remove from heat and stir in the pineapple juice, lemon juice, and orange juice until well blended.

FREEZE. Pour the mixture into two separate containers (or gallon Ziploc bags) and place in the freezer until they are mostly frozen but still slightly soft. Overnight usually works well, depending on your freezer.

MIX + SERVE. When ready to serve, combine the contents of one frozen container with one 2-liter bottle of lemon-lime soda (Sprite or 7UP) in a punch bowl. Stir until you reach a slushy consistency. Repeat for the second container if you need to make more punch.

Notes:

  • This version is divided to make two punch bowls for a large event. To make less, halve the recipe.
  • For a Halloween presentation, place a few wax vampire fangs in the punch bowl for a spooky effect; not every cup needs one.

Recipe Variations + Tips

I used strawberry gelatin for a bright pink color that pairs nicely with the vampire teeth. You can swap in other Jell-O flavors—cherry or raspberry both work well. Choose a flavor that complements the pineapple and orange juice for the best balance.

This punch is labeled as a Halloween drink, but it’s suitable for any celebration. For non-Halloween events, remove the vampire teeth and garnish with sliced strawberries, lemon wheels, or mint sprigs for a fresh look. Another option is to rim glasses with sugar: dip the rim in lemon juice, then into granulated sugar for a sparkly finish. For a playful touch, serve with fun straws or cocktail umbrellas.

Freezing Tips

A gallon-size freezer bag is a handy container for half of the mixture; use a second bag for the other half. Freeze until the mixture is mostly solid but still slightly pliable—overnight is often ideal but will vary by freezer.

If the mixture becomes completely solid, let it thaw for 1–2 hours at room temperature or soften in the microwave in short 30-second bursts until you can break it into a slushy. To turn a frozen block into slush, place it in a roasting pan, add a little soda at a time, and use a potato masher to break it up. Then transfer the slush to a punch bowl and stir in the remaining soda.

Slushy Punch Recipe

Author: Kristyn Merkley

Summary: A fruity, fizzy slushy punch that’s easy to make and perfect for parties. Add wax fangs for a Halloween twist or garnish with fruit for other occasions.

Servings: 2 punch bowls

Prep: 5 mins | Cook: 5 mins | Total: 10 mins (plus freezing time)

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 6 cups water
  • 6 ounces Strawberry JELL-O mix (or cherry/raspberry)
  • 46 ounces pineapple juice
  • 1 quart orange juice
  • ½ cup lemon juice
  • 4 liters lemon-lime soda (Sprite or 7UP), divided into bottles for mixing

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, bring the sugar, water, and gelatin mix to a boil, stirring until dissolved.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the pineapple juice, lemon juice, and orange juice.
  3. Divide the mixture into two containers and freeze until mostly solid but still slightly soft.
  4. To serve, combine one frozen container with one bottle of lemon-lime soda in a punch bowl. Stir until slushy. Repeat with the second container if making more.

Notes

  • This recipe yields two large punch bowls; halve the recipe for a single bowl or keep the extra frozen for another day.
  • Bring the sugar, water, and gelatin to a full boil to ensure the gelatin dissolves thoroughly for the smoothest texture.
  • Flavor variations: swap strawberry Jell-O for cherry or raspberry.
  • Prep ahead: the base mixture can be frozen for up to two months. Thaw at room temperature for 1–2 hours before adding the soda.
  • Storage: store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day.
