About This Crunchwrap Supreme Recipe
Taco Bell used to be my favourite late-night stop, but I avoid it now because their kitchens cannot guarantee gluten-free preparation. I set out to recreate my college go-to snack at home and came up with a version that delivers the same melty, crunchy experience — entirely gluten-free. You can also make this grain-free by choosing grain-free tortillas and shells.
Ingredients You Will Need
Two types of tortillas are required: soft tortillas and a hard shell or tostada for crunch.
- 8 gluten-free soft tortillas (brands like Mission or Siete work well)
- 4 gluten-free hard taco shells, broken in half, or 4 gluten-free tostadas
- 1/2 lb seasoned taco meat (ground beef or ground turkey)
- Toppings: shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes (optional), sour cream (or a dairy-free alternative), and plenty of cheddar or a dairy-free cheese
- Optional: nacho-style cheese or cashew queso for a different texture
- Oil for frying, if cooking on the stovetop
Tip: Buy at least two packages of your chosen soft tortillas — you will use more soft tortillas than hard shells.
How To Make Gluten-Free Crunchwrap Supremes
Assembly is simple and quick once your meat is ready.
Start by preparing your taco meat and seasoning it to taste. Brown the meat, add taco seasoning and a splash of water, then simmer until the flavors come together. That’s the only real cooking step.
You will need three tortilla pieces per crunchwrap: one full soft tortilla as the base, a hard shell taco broken in half (or a tostada) for the crunchy layer, and a small soft tortilla circle cut from another tortilla to seal the top.

On a fresh soft tortilla, layer 1–2 tablespoons of your cooked taco meat, followed by a generous sprinkle of shredded cheese. Place the hard shell halves or a tostada on top of the cheese to add crunch. Add a dollop of sour cream, shredded lettuce, and tomatoes if you like, then more cheese. Finish by placing the small tortilla circle over the filling.
Press down gently to compact the layers, then fold the edges of the large tortilla inward to seal the contents. The gluten-free soft tortillas can be delicate, so fold carefully and press the seams with your fingers to help them stick.

How To Cook Crunchwrap Supremes
A panini press or George Foreman-style grill works wonderfully because it crisps both sides evenly and flattens the crunchwrap. If you don’t have one, a frying pan over medium heat is perfectly fine — place the crunchwrap seam-side down, press with a spatula or another pan, and flip after 2–3 minutes to brown the other side. Total cook time is about 3–5 minutes per side depending on heat and equipment.

Let the finished crunchwrap cool for a couple of minutes so the cheese settles, then slice and serve. You’ll have a melty, crispy meal ready in under 40 minutes.
Troubleshooting Common Problems With Crunchwraps
Gluten-free tortillas can tear or split if handled cold or overfilled. Here are a few quick tips:
- Avoid overfilling. Too much meat, cheese, or lettuce makes folding difficult and increases the chance of a tear.
- Work at room temperature. Cold tortillas are stiffer and more likely to crack. Warm them for 8–12 seconds in the microwave under a damp paper towel if needed.
- Use your fingers to press and seal. Gently pressing the folds helps them adhere. Small tears are usually sealed down when you grill the crunchwrap, so keep going if one appears.
What To Serve With Gluten-Free Crunchwrap Supremes
These Crunchwraps are quite filling on their own, but they pair nicely with fresh guacamole, a simple salad, or chips and salsa. For a dairy-free option, use cashew queso and dairy-free sour cream and cheese.

Notes
To make this grain-free, use grain-free tortillas and shells. For dairy-free, swap in cashew queso, dairy-free sour cream, and vegan cheese. Crunchwraps are best fresh; store leftovers refrigerated and re-crisp under the broiler or in a toaster oven.
