Jump to Recipe

These baked maple glazed donuts are soft, cakey, and finished with a rich maple icing that sets into the perfect sticky-sweet topping. They are gluten free, eggless, easy to make from scratch, and ideal for a cozy breakfast, dessert, or afternoon treat.

If you love homemade baked donuts, this maple version deserves a spot on your baking list. Instead of frying dough in hot oil, these donuts are baked in a donut pan, which makes the process simple, tidy, and approachable. The texture is tender and cake-like, with just enough moisture from Greek yogurt and whole milk to keep every bite soft.

Maple is one of those flavors that feels warm and comforting any time of year, but it is especially welcome during the fall season. The deep sweetness of pure maple syrup, combined with a light touch of nutmeg, gives these donuts a bakery-style flavor without requiring yeast, eggs, or complicated steps.

These gluten free maple donuts are wonderful with a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. They are sweet enough to feel special, but not so fussy that you need to save them for a holiday. Whether you are baking for brunch, a weekend treat, or a cozy dessert, this recipe delivers soft donuts with a glossy maple glaze that tastes homemade in the best way.

The maple glaze is quick to prepare on the stovetop using butter, pure maple syrup, powdered sugar, milk, and a pinch of salt. Once the donuts have cooled completely, dip the tops into the glaze and let them rest on a wire rack until the icing sets. A small sprinkle of sea salt on top is optional, but it balances the sweetness beautifully.

Why You’ll Love These Baked Maple Glazed Donuts

  • They are baked instead of fried, so there is no need to handle hot oil or wait for dough to rise.
  • The texture is soft, moist, and cakey, making these donuts perfect for anyone who enjoys baked donuts.
  • The recipe is gluten free and eggless, while still tasting rich and satisfying.
  • The maple glaze is smooth, sweet, and full of real maple flavor.
  • You do not need a mixer. A whisk, a bowl, and a spoon or spatula are enough.
  • They are easy to make ahead and can be frozen for later.

What You’ll Need

  • Dry ingredients: gluten free flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground nutmeg.
  • Sweeteners: brown sugar and granulated sugar. The brown sugar helps add moisture and a deeper flavor.
  • Fat: melted unsalted butter gives the donuts richness without making them heavy.
  • Moisture: whole milk and Greek yogurt keep the donuts tender and soft.
  • Maple glaze: unsalted butter, pure maple syrup, powdered sugar, whole milk, and a pinch of salt.

How To Make Maple Glazed Donuts From Scratch

Start by preheating the oven to 350°F and greasing your donut pan well. This helps the donuts release cleanly after baking and keeps their shape intact.

In one bowl, whisk together the gluten free flour, baking powder, baking soda, ground nutmeg, and salt. Whisking the dry ingredients first helps distribute the leavening evenly, which gives the donuts a better rise and a more consistent texture.

In a separate bowl, combine the melted butter with the brown sugar and granulated sugar. Stir in the whole milk and Greek yogurt until the mixture is smooth. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix gently with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon. The batter will be thick and moist, almost like a soft mousse. Mix only until combined so the donuts stay tender.

Spoon or pipe the batter into the prepared donut pan. Piping can be a little neater, but a spoon works just fine. Bake the donuts for 14 to 16 minutes, or until they are set and lightly spring back when touched. Let them cool in the pan for about 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

While the donuts cool, prepare the maple glaze. Melt the butter with the pure maple syrup in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the sifted powdered sugar, milk, and a pinch of salt. Let the glaze sit for a few minutes so it can thicken slightly.

Before glazing, make sure the donuts are fully cooled. Dip the tops into the maple glaze, then place them back on the wire rack. The glaze may drip as it sets, so placing parchment paper or paper towels underneath the rack makes cleanup much easier.

Finish the donuts with a small sprinkle of sea salt if desired. Let the glaze set for about 30 minutes before serving.

Can I Freeze Maple Donuts?

Yes, these maple glazed donuts can be frozen. For the best texture, freeze them the same day they are baked or the next day. Because the glaze is sticky, place a sheet of parchment paper or wax paper between each donut before storing them in a freezer-safe container.

You can freeze the donuts for up to three months. When ready to serve, thaw them in the refrigerator. If you prefer a slightly warm donut, heat gently after thawing.

Tips For The Best Maple Glazed Donuts

  • Use pure maple syrup for the glaze, not pancake syrup, for the best maple flavor.
  • Do not overmix the batter once the dry ingredients are added.
  • Grease the donut pan well so the donuts release easily.
  • Let the donuts cool completely before dipping them into the glaze.
  • Place parchment paper under the cooling rack to catch glaze drips.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups (222g) gluten free flour (I use Bob’s Red Mill 1 to 1)
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • cup (67g) brown sugar packed
  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons (42g) unsalted butter melted
  • ¼ cup (60ml) whole milk room temperature
  • 1 cup (225g) Greek yogurt room temperature

For the glaze:

  • 1 tablespoon (14g) unsalted butter
  • cup (80ml) pure maple syrup
  • ¾ cup (90g) powdered sugar sifted
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk
  • pinch salt

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a donut pan and set it aside.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the gluten free flour, baking powder, baking soda, ground nutmeg, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar and granulated sugar with the melted butter. Add the milk and Greek yogurt, then stir until smooth. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
  • Spoon or pipe the batter into the prepared donut pan. Bake for 14 to 16 minutes. Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire cooling rack.
  • To make the glaze, melt the butter with the maple syrup in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Once the butter has melted, remove from the heat and stir in the powdered sugar, milk, and a pinch of salt. Let the glaze sit for 5 minutes to thicken slightly.
  • Dip the cooled donuts into the glaze, then return them to the cooling rack. Finish with an optional sprinkle of sea salt and let the glaze set for about 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • The glaze will drip while the donuts set, so place parchment paper or paper towels under the wire rack for easy cleanup.
  • Make sure the donuts are completely cool before glazing, or the glaze may become too thin and run off.
