Stingray City Grand Cayman Tour Excursion
A Stingray City Grand Cayman tour is easily one of the best shore excursions I have experienced anywhere. I have visited Stingray City twice, and I would happily go again if I had the chance. It is one of those rare excursions that feels exciting, a little surreal, and completely memorable from the moment you arrive.
The water around Stingray City is absolutely stunning. It is some of the clearest water I have seen anywhere in the world, and the color alone makes the trip worthwhile. As your boat approaches the sandbar, you can often look over the side and see stingrays gliding through the water below. It is amazing, but I will be honest: it can also feel a little intimidating at first. Seeing the stingrays moving toward the boats makes the experience feel almost unreal, especially when you realize you are about to get in the water with them.
When you arrive at Stingray City, you will likely see several boats gathered around the sandbar. At first, I wondered if it would feel too crowded or if the number of boats would make it harder to see the stingrays. Thankfully, that was not the case at all. The boats were spread out enough that we did not feel packed in, and there were plenty of stingrays swimming throughout the area.
The stingrays seemed to appear from every direction, and even as our tour was ending, more were still swimming into the area. Despite the popularity of the excursion, we did not have problems bumping into guests from other boats or feeling like the experience was too busy. Once you are in the water, the focus quickly shifts to the stingrays, the clear sea, and the incredible feeling of being in such a beautiful place.

Our boat provided masks and snorkels for everyone, which made it easy to get in the water without needing a lot of extra gear. That said, I really wish we had brought our own snorkel with a purge valve. The water was a bit rough on the day we visited, and we ended up getting more water in our snorkels than expected.
The sandbar is shallow, around three and a half feet deep, so most people can stand comfortably. However, waves, splashing, and movement from other guests can make snorkeling a little more challenging if your snorkel does not clear easily. Even if you do not spend the entire time snorkeling, having a mask helps you see the stingrays as they move gracefully through the water around your legs.
Things to bring
Sunscreen – The Caribbean sun can be intense, especially when you are out on the boat and standing in shallow water. Apply sunscreen before the tour and reapply as needed. Trust me, you do not want to end the day as bright pink as I did after soaking up the sun on the top of the boat.
Water shoes – If you are nervous about what you might step on, water shoes are a smart item to pack. I was worried about accidentally stepping down on a stingray, which thankfully did not happen. You will want to shuffle your feet along the sandy bottom rather than taking big steps, and water shoes can make you feel more comfortable while doing that.
Underwater camera – This is one item I really wish we had brought. Stingray City is incredibly photogenic, and the water is so clear that it is perfect for underwater pictures and videos. If you want great stingray photos, pack a waterproof camera or a reliable underwater phone case.
Towel and dry clothes – After spending time in the water, it is nice to have a towel ready for the boat ride back. Depending on your plans after the excursion, dry clothes may also make the rest of your day more comfortable.
A calm attitude – The stingrays are large and can be surprising when they brush past you, but staying calm makes the experience much more enjoyable. Listen to the crew’s instructions, move slowly, and give yourself a few minutes to get used to the feeling of being in the water with them.
