Football bark recipe for game day or the Super Bowl, made with chocolate, green candy melts, almonds, and royal icing.

This is the BEST candy bark!

-Liz

If you need a festive dessert for game day, this football bark is a playful and delicious choice. It has the classic look of a football field, complete with green swirls and almond “footballs” decorated with royal icing laces. The recipe is easy enough for beginners, yet cute enough to serve at a Super Bowl party, football birthday celebration, tailgate table, or casual weekend watch party.

Football bark with chocolate, green candy melts, and almond football decorations.

This candy bark starts with melted semi-sweet chocolate chips and green candy melts. A small amount of vegetable oil helps both mixtures melt smoothly and spread easily. Once the chocolate and candy melts are swirled together on a lined baking sheet, whole almonds are added on top. After a short chill, the almonds are decorated with a small batch of royal icing so they resemble little footballs.

The best part about this football bark recipe is how flexible it is. You can make it the same day you plan to serve it, or prepare it a few days ahead and keep it chilled until party time. Because the bark needs time to firm up, plan for at least 1 hour and 30 minutes from start to finish. Most of that time is hands-off while the chocolate hardens in the refrigerator.

Football-themed desserts are a fun way to bring extra energy to a snack table. This recipe is especially great because it is easy to break into pieces, serve in a bowl, arrange on a platter, or package in small treat bags. The mix of chocolate, candy coating, and crunchy almonds gives each bite a sweet flavor with a little texture.

For the cleanest look, let the bark chill briefly before piping the football details onto the almonds. The first line of icing should set before you add the smaller stitches. This helps keep the design neat and makes the almonds look more like tiny footballs. If you do not have a squeeze bottle, a small zip-top bag with one corner snipped off works well.

This football bark is a crowd-friendly Super Bowl dessert because it does not require slicing, frosting, or complicated decorating. Once the chocolate is firm, simply break it into pieces and serve. Store the bark in an airtight container or plastic bag, and keep it in the refrigerator if you prefer a firmer texture.

This football bark recipe is perfect for game day or the Super Bowl. It uses a short ingredient list, comes together easily, and is ready in under 2 hours.

Equipment

  • Glass mixing bowl
  • Silicone baking mat or foil
  • Baking sheet
  • Spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups (255g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 ½ cups green candy melts
  • ½ Tbsp vegetable oil
  • whole almonds

Small Batch of Royal Icing

  • ½ cup (56g) powdered sugar
  • ½ tsp meringue powder
  • ½ Tbsp water

Instructions

  • Line a 10 x 15 inch rimmed baking sheet with foil or a silicone baking mat.
  • Melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips with ½ tablespoon vegetable oil in a pot over low heat, stirring occasionally with a spatula until smooth.
  • In a separate pot, melt the green candy melts with the remaining ½ tablespoon vegetable oil over low heat, stirring until smooth.
  • Pour the melted chocolate and green candy melts onto the prepared pan. Swirl them together with a butter knife or small metal spatula to create a marbled football-field look.
  • Place whole almonds across the melted bark while it is still soft.
  • Refrigerate for 15 to 20 minutes before decorating the almonds.
  • To make the royal icing, combine powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water in a mixing bowl. Mix for about 2 minutes, or until the icing looks matte. Add a tiny bit more water if needed, keeping the icing thick enough to hold its shape but soft enough to pipe.
  • Transfer the icing to a squeeze bottle or a zip-top bag with one corner snipped off.
  • Pipe a center stripe on each almond to begin the football design.
  • Let the icing set for 10 to 15 minutes, then add three small stitches to each almond.
  • Refrigerate the bark for 40 to 60 minutes, or until the chocolate feels firm and no longer soft when gently pressed.
  • Break the bark into smaller pieces and serve.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container or plastic bag. For the firmest texture, keep the bark in the refrigerator.
