This baked beans recipe is an ideal side for summer barbecues. Unlike plain canned beans, these are enriched with savory sausage, sautéed vegetables and a touch of sweet maple syrup for a balanced, memorable flavor.
My father-in-law is an exceptional cook. It isn’t just formal training—though he has that—or family tradition—though he grew up with southern cooking. What sets him apart is his understanding of flavor and the confidence to cook by taste. When I was 18 he shared that confidence with me and showed me how to build this dish.
I can’t recall the exact day, only that it was a warm Kentucky afternoon with spices, pans and ingredients spread across the counter. He was preparing what looked like a typical backyard barbecue, and one of the standout dishes was his pot of baked beans—deeper and more complex than any beans I had tasted before.
Instead of spending the afternoon socializing, I followed him into the kitchen. He browned different meats in a skillet, added vegetables, then combined everything in a large bowl. When I asked for measurements, he smiled and said, “as much as it needs.” That moment could have been frustrating, but it became a lesson: cooking well requires confidence in your palate.
He didn’t measure precisely because he knew how each ingredient would affect the final dish—the sweetness of maple, the bite of mustard, and how spices would harmonize. He also taught me a simple rule: you can always add more, but you can’t remove what’s already in the pot. That lesson gave me the freedom to experiment. Some days we make the beans spicy with hot sausage and peppers; other days we lean toward sweet with maple sausage. The base technique remains the same and always yields delicious results.
Jimbo’s Baked Beans
Ingredients
- ½ roll (8 oz) Jimmy Dean maple sausage
- 2 links Johnsonville Italian sausage (mild or spicy)
- 1 bell pepper, chopped
- ½ sweet onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp Tony’s seasoning (or a similar Cajun/Creole blend)
- 2 (28 oz) cans Bush’s Baked Beans, any flavor
- ½ cup Sweet Baby Ray’s honey barbecue sauce
- ¼ cup yellow mustard
- ¼ cup maple syrup
Instructions
- Remove the Italian sausage from its casing and break it apart. Place the Italian sausage and the maple sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the meats, using a spatula to chop them into smaller pieces as they cook.
- Add the chopped bell pepper, minced garlic and chopped sweet onion to the skillet. Sauté until the vegetables are tender and fragrant. Season with kosher salt, black pepper and Tony’s seasoning, adjusting to taste.
- In a large mixing bowl, pour in the two cans of baked beans. Stir in the honey barbecue sauce, yellow mustard and maple syrup until well combined.
- Add the browned meat and sautéed vegetables to the bowl of beans. Stir thoroughly so the flavors are evenly distributed. Taste and adjust seasoning or sweetness if needed—remember you can add more but you can’t take it away.
- To heat and serve: transfer the mixture to a 13×9-inch baking pan and bake at 350°F (175°C) until warmed through, about 20–30 minutes; or microwave the bowl of beans until hot; or place the beans in a crockpot and heat on low until thoroughly warmed. Serve hot alongside your favorite grilled mains.
Notes
This recipe is flexible. Swap sausage varieties, adjust the amount of maple syrup for sweetness, or add a diced jalapeño or habanero for heat. The key is to taste and trust your instincts as you balance sweet, savory and spicy elements.
